Generations Two through Five

Chapter 3: Generation Two

1.       Glenn2 Orville Hufford, Junior, born 2 July 1927, probably in Tulsa, Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA although he might have been born in one of the surrounding counties.  He was the son of Glenn Orville Hufford and Luella Rebecca Carnahan.  No official record of his birth has been found (as of 7 March 2013). He enlisted in the US Army on 13 April 1951 (serial number 54046248). He died by accidental drowning on 15 August 1951 at Inks Lake, Buchanan Dan, Burnett, Texas, USA while in training with the Company D, 634th Combat Infantry Brigade, U.S. Army.  He graduated from Central High School, Tulsa, OK in 1947 where he was a member of the track team.  Earlier education was at Roosevelt Junior High School and John Burroughs Elementary School both in Tulsa, OK.  He is buried at Memorial Park Cemetery, Tulsa, OK, USA.  He married Mary Emmalou Marrett on 10 January 1950 in Tulsa, Tulsa, OK, USA.

2.       Mary3 Emmalou Marrett  is the daughter of Fred D. Marrett and Elfreda (Dot) Stutzman.  She graduated Carthage High School, Carthage, Missouri in 1949.  Mary and Glenn were separated, but not divorced, at the time of his death.  Mary married Nolan Wayne Baker, son of William Nolan Baker and Ruth Leona Brooks in Dallas, Dallas, Texas, USA.

Chapter 4: Generation Three

3.       Glenn4 Orville Hufford, born 9 January 1909 in Tulsa, Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA to Thomas Jefferson Hufford and Pearl(ie) Mae Wise.  He died on 16 August 1981 from complications related to diabetes plus multiple strokes and perhaps a heart attack in Tulsa, Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA and is buried in Memorial Park Cemetery, Tulsa, OK.  He married Luella Rebecca Carnahan on 28 November 1928 in Creek County, Oklahoma.  They remained married until about 1950 when they divorced.  Glenn lived most of his life in Tulsa or the surrounding counties.  As a young man he worked several jobs at various oil fields.  By the 1940 census he was the owner of a gasoline station and living in Tulsa, Tulsa, OK.  In 1935 he, and his wife and son, had been living in Bristow, Creek, OK.   Prior to his death he owned a tool and die company in Tulsa.  Following his divorce from Luella, Glenn married Bertha B Gammell on 17 August 1957.  This marriage took place in Joplin, Jasper, Missouri.  They remained married until Glenn’s death.  Glenn’s Social Security Number was: 446-10-2484.

4.       Luella5 Rebecca Carnahan, born 1 October 1912, was the daughter of George Washington Carnahan and Dora Baker.  Luella was probably born in Oklahoma, USA.  She died after fighting cancer for several years on 26 July 1992 in Stockton, San Joaquin, California and is buried in Lodi, San Joaquin, California.  She had moved to California following her divorce.  For approximately twenty-five years she owned and operated Luella’s Café in Lodi, San Joaquin, CA.  At the time of the 1940 census her occupation was listed as Proprietor of a café.   Her second marriage was to Emery Kuykendall in about 1956.

5.       Fred6 D. Marrett, born 16 September 1897 in Reeds, Jasper, Missouri, USA was the son of Charles C. Marrett and Ida Mae Duke.  He lived much of his live in either Jasper or Barton County, Missouri but did spend several years in the Oakland, California area beginning before the start of WWII.  He served in the Merchant Marines during WWII.  He married Elfelda (Dot) Stutzman in Cuyahoga County, Ohio on 29 May 1920.  They divorced in about 1947.  Fred died on 2 September 1949 from testicular cancer and is buried in Reeds Cemetery, Reeds, Jasper, Missouri.

6.       Elfelda7 (Dot) Stutzman, born 10 December 1904 in Avilla, Jasper, Missouri to Andrew Jackson Stutzman and Mary Adaline Bower Arthur Stutzman.  She died 11 April 1968 from Hodgkin ’s disease in Paso Robles, San Louis Obispo, California and is buried in Paso Robles.  Her second marriage was to William Kingsbury Schasteen.

Chapter 5: Generation 4

7.       Thomas8 Jefferson Hufford, born 6 June 1882, probably in Berryville, Carroll, Arkansas, USA (county is assumed to be correct, town may or may not be accurate) to William Lafayette Hufford and Melinda Jane Hogue.  He died 2 February 1966 in Tulsa, Tulsa, Oklahoma and is buried in Memorial Park Cemetery, Tulsa, Tulsa, Oklahoma.  Lived in either Carroll or Polk county, Arkansas until at least the 1900 census.  Sometime prior to 1907 moved to Oklahoma.  Married Pearl Mae Wise in Tulsa, Tulsa, Oklahoma on 20 November 1907.  Much of his working life after marrying Pearl Mae was in various oil fields and for varying oil companies in the counties surrounding Tulsa.  He held different positions including teamster (1920 census) and riding a horse to check the pipelines for leaks (his granddaughters said this was what he was doing during the Great Depression and 1940s.  It could be that a construction foreman, which is what the census reports say he was during the 1930 and 1940 census, was responsible for checking the pipelines).  During the 1910 census, Thomas, Pearl and Glenn were living in Black Dog Township, Osage, OK where Thomas was working as a laborer at the timber mill. At the 1920 Census, Thomas and Pearl lived in the Third Ward, Owosso Township, Sperry, OK while Thomas was employed as a teamster in the oil field.  At the time of the 1930 census, Thomas, Pearl and Wayne were living in Lakeside Township, Creek, OK.  Thomas was working as a construction foreman in an oil field.  During the 1940 census, Thomas, Pearl and their son Wayne T.J were still living in Lakeside Township, Creek, OK where Thomas continued working as a construction foreman at an oilfield. He had earned $2460 the previous year.  The highest grade that he completed was third.

8.       Pearl9 Mae Wise, born 13 May 1887, Winfield, Cowley, Kansas.  Her parents were Joseph Able Wise and Hannah Haney.  Pearl died on 28 July 1955 in Tulsa, Tulsa, Oklahoma from cancer and is buried in Memorial Park Cemetery, Tulsa, Oklahoma.  She was a member of the Reorganized Latter Day Saints church and may have met Thomas through the RLDS as they both show up as members of the same church prior to their marriage and Thomas’ mother was also a member of the RLDS.  Pearl was also known as Pearlie or Mae.  It does not appear that Pearl worked outside the home.  The highest grade she completed was the sixth (according to the 1940 census for which she was the person responding).  Two of her granddaughters (Wayne’s daughters) recall that when they helped clean house Pearl would “hide” pennies.  When the girls were finished cleaning Pearl would ask how many pennies they had found.  If they were short, they had to go back and clean some more to find all of the pennies.

9.       George10 Washington Carnahan, born 6 August 1874, died 25 March 1948 in Drumright, Creek, Oklahoma was the son of George William Carnahan and Nancy Isabel Taylor.  He married Dora Baker on 20 March 1892 in Crawford, Arkansas.  From around 1900 until his death he lived in various oil producing regions of Oklahoma and worked in different positions as a laborer within the oil field industry.  It seems likely that he was born in Arkansas as that is where his parents were married and where he was living at the time of the 1880 census.  During the 1920 census, George and his family were living in Tiger Township, Creek, OK where George was employed as a laborer in the oil field.  During the 1930 census, George was listed as being a widower living with his daughter Charlotte in Lakeside Township, Creek, OK.  His occupation was listed as an oil field pumper.  Interestingly, the age given for his first marriage was 14.  That seems unlikely since Dora would have been only 12 at that time.

10.   Dora11 Baker, born 11 April 1876 probably in Tennessee; died 15 September 1929 in Bristow, Creek, Oklahoma.  She was the daughter of Leonard Baker and Martha A C Walker.  She is buried in Bristow Cemetery, Bristow, Creek, Oklahoma.

12.   Ida13 Mae Duke, born 28 January 1873, in Hurricane, Putnam, West Virginia and died 26 October 1947 in Reeds, Jasper, Missouri.  She was the daughter if Christopher Columbus Duke and Joan Issac.  She is buried in Reeds Cemetery, Reeds, Jasper, Missouri.

Chapter 6: Generation 5

15.   William16 Lafayette Hufford, born about May 1848 most likely in Lawrence County, Indiana which is where his parents, Jefferson Hufford and Malanda Jane [last name not confirmed but rumored to be Boone] were living.  William died on 13 January 1928 in Depew, Creek, Oklahoma, USA and is buried at Rose Hill Cemetery, Tulsa, Tulsa, Oklahoma.  His headstone has his name as William Jefferson Hufford however that is most likely incorrect as that is the only time that “Jefferson” has appeared as his middle name.   He moved with his parents to Jasper County, Missouri in about 1853 where he remained until the mid to late 1870’s.  He married Melinda Jane Hogue on 3 July 1874 in Jasper County, Missouri.  During the 1880 census Wiliam and Melinda along with two daughters were living in Eureka Springs, Carroll, Arkansas where William was employed as a “laborer.”  On 24 July 1888, William purchased a land patent for 120 acres SSE of Eureka Springs, Carroll, Arkansas.  The census of 1900 lists William residing in Cove Township, Polk, Arkansas.  By the 1910 census William, Melinda and two daughters (Nora and Eva) were residing in Degnan, Latimer, Oklahoma.  By 1920 William was living in Owasso, Tulsa, Oklahoma.

16.   Melinda17 Jane Hogue, was born about 10 May 1859 probably in Clarksville, Illinois but perhaps in Green County, Illinois.   [Information on her death certificate, provided by SP Hogue of Sperry, Oklahoma lists Clarksville while RLDS records show Green County.  Green County seems more likely given its physical location adjacent to Missouri and that Clarksville is almost non-existent and on the eastern side of the state.]  She had at least twelve children of whom nine survived to adulthood.  Melinda died on 22 August 1926 perhaps from tuberculosis which she may have received from one of her granddaughters.  Family lore has it that she and her daughter, Susie, took a train from Tulsa to the nearest tuberculosis sanatorium to treat the granddaughter and that Melinda held the girl most of the trip.  Her granddaughter died on the way.  Susie died soon thereafter.  However, since Melinda did not die until several years later, part of this “family tale” seems questionable.   Melinda’s place of death was Sperry, Tulsa, Oklahoma.  She is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Tulsa, Tulsa, Oklahoma.  The cemetery office has her name as Melinda Jane Hafford so computer searches of those buried at Rose Hill do not return her name.  However her gravestone is correct.

17.   Joseph18 Abe Wise was probably born in June 1859 (according to the information listed on his funeral service; census reports give different estimates) in Ramsey, Oklahoma.  His parents were John Wise and Annis (Last name unknown).   At the time of the 1880 census he was living in Neosho, Coffee, Kansas.  He married Hannah Haney in about 1882.  The Kansas State Census for 1895 shows Joseph and Hannah living in Scranton, Osage, Kansas.  He died on 15 April 1922 in Tulsa, Tulsa, Oklahoma.

18.   Hannah19 Haney was born 12 September 1857 in Vandalia, Fayette, Illinois.  She is the daughter of William K Haney and Hannah (last name unknown as of 8 March 2013).  At the time of the 1860 census her family was residing in Township 1, Range 8 of St. Clair County, Illinois.  She died on 7 November 1853 in Tulsa, Tulsa, Oklahoma.

19.   George20 William Carnahan was reportedly born on 17 April 1839 in Crane Hill, Washington, Arkansas and died on 19 January 1914 in Fayetteville, Washington, Arkansas.  He was probably the son of Benjamin Young Carnahan and Hopestelle Hardister.  At the time of the 1900 census, George William was living in Cimarron Township, Payne, Oklahoma with his wife Nancy Isabell and daughters Betty and Cora.  His occupation was listed as farmer.  The census reports that he and Nancy had been married 32 years thus making the year of their marriage about 1868 although the 1870 census implies that their marriage would have been in about 1864.  They were living next door to Dillard Carnahan and his wife Maggie and son Lee.  By 1910 George William seems to have been widowed and looks to be living with his daughter, Nancy J and Nancy’s husband, George W. Staggs in Pawnee, Payne, Oklahoma.  The earliest census that George William seems to appear in is the 1850 where it looks like he is living with his mother (age 37) his siblings, and a step-father, A.B. Taylor in Marion County, Arkansas.  Taylor is listed as being 60 years old and all of the children at this household have “Carnahan” as their last name.  George William Carnahan is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery, Ripley, Payne County, OK.  According to the newspaper obituary at Find A Grave Memorial # 19697717, he died on 19 January 1914 in Fayetteville, Arkansas and his body was returned to Stillwater, Oklahoma for burial.  This site also says that his middle name was Washington although the gravestone just lists G W Carnahan and George Washington10 Carnahan is not listed anywhere as a “Junior”.  The Strode Funeral Home (Record #2-189) may have additional information.  The Find A Grave says that George William’s wife was Nancy Isabel Irvin however I currently believe that Taylor is her correct maiden name.

20.   Nancy Isabel Taylor was born on 17 September 1844 probably in North Carolina and died on 14 March 1909 in Stillwater, Payne, Oklahoma.  Her parents have not been identified but according to the information provided on the 1900 census they may have both been from North Carolina also.  The 1870 census says that G W Carnahan and Nancy Isa have a five year old daughter Francis and a three year old daughter, Sarah.  Assuming that Francis is their first child and that Nancy and George were married for about a year before Francis was born, their marriage would have been in 1864/1865.  At the time of the 1870 census Nancy and George were living in Prairie, Boone County, Oklahoma.

21.   Leonard Baker, father of Dora11 Baker, was born around November 1850 in Dyer County, Tennessee.  According to the Tennessee State Marriages, 1780-2002, he married Martha A C Walker on 11 January 1872. At the time of the 1880 census, Leonard and Martha and their children Seymore, Dora, Adella, and Marion were still living in Dyer County (District 7), Tennessee.  Samuel Baker (age 62) lived on one side of Leonard and William Baker (age 50) and his wife Lucinda (age 47) lived on the other side.

22.   Martha A C Walker was born about 1855 and was the daughter of Sam Walker and May (Mae) [last name unknown].  At the time of the 1870 census Martha was living with her parents in Dyer County, Tennessee in the same district as Leonard.  There were many “Walker” family members in Dyer County, Tennessee during this census.

23.   Able Jackson Marrett was born around 1822 probably in Ohio although some sources report he was born in Clay County, Illinois. [It seems likely that those who have Clay County, IL as A J’s birthplace confused A J with his children who were born in Illinois and probably were born in Clay County.]  He was the son of John J Marrett and Ruth Patsy Kirkpatrick.  According to Illinois Marriages, 1851-1900, he married Mary Jane Lawler on 20 November 1851 in Adams County, Illinois.  The 1850 census shows him living with his father and siblings in Clayton, Adams County, Illinois where he was a farmer.  During the 1875 Kansas State Census, A J, Mary J and their children, Charles, Julia, Emma and Schuler were living in Cottage Grove, Allen County, Kansas where AJ was farming 200 acres.  All of the children were listed as being born in Illinois; Mary J in Kentucky and A J in Ohio.  During the 1900 census he was living in Sarcoxie, Jasper County, Missouri with his son Charles12.  He was listed as “disabled” at the time of this census.  [Charles’ profession was “painter”.]  A J is buried in Jasper Cemetery which is located west of Reeds, Jasper County, Missouri.

24.   Mary Jane Lawler, wife of Able Jackson Marrett, was probably born between 1831 and 1833.  She was reportedly born in Indiana.  The 1850 Census shows a Mary J Lawler living with her parents, Absom Lawler and his wife Elizabeth, plus a number of siblings in Smyrna, Jefferson County, Indiana.  The Illinois Marriages, 1851-1900, indicates that Mary Jane Lawler and A J Marrett were married in Clayton, Adams County, Illinois 20 November 1851.  At the time of the 1880 census Mary Jane and Able Jackson Marrett were living in Crawford, Cherokee County, Kansas.  Mary Jane Marrett is buried in Jasper Cemetery, west of Reeds, Jasper County, Missouri.

25.   Lewis Stutzman, born 8 April 1836, reportedly in Boone County, Indiana (according to Charles Chrisman’s book).  The 1850 Census shows him living in District 7, Boone County, Indiana.  The Indiana Marriage Collection, 1800-1941 show that he married Lavinia (Louvina) Ann Wall on 22 February 1858 in Boone County, Indiana where they seemed to have remained until moving to Missouri in 1867.  At the time of the 1870 census Lewis was living in Mcdonald township, Jasper County, Missouri.  During the 1880 Census they were in Madison, Jasper, Missouri where they remained until about the time of his death in 1920.  Lewis died on 2 March 1920 of cerebral hemorrhage in Carthage, Jasper, Missouri and is buried in Faskins Cemetery, Jasper, Missouri.

26.   Lavina (Louvina) Ann Wall was born on 14 October 1839 in Boone County, Indiana where she continued to live until sometime after her marriage to Lewis Stutzman on 22 February 1858.  Around the time of  Lewis’ death in 1920, Lavina moved to Carthage, Jasper County, Missouri.  She resided at 714 Howard Street while living in Carthage.  She died on 9 August 1927 of “chronic cystitis”.  She is buried in Faskins Cemetery, Jasper County, Missouri.
